Ethernet Frequently Ask Questions (click here to go back to Tenants Main)

1.  Does the Conquest Network connect to USC?

  • Not directly. We provide the high speed access through our own service provider. To access USC's restricted resources, you need a VPN client.  It's available for most operating systems (except for Windows Millennium edition).

2.  I cannot find my Ethernet address, what should I do?

  • Make sure that you have your Ethernet network adapter (an Ethernet card) properly installed.  You may have a modem and not an Ethernet adapter.  The RJ-45 Ethernet jack is a little bit bigger than the RJ-11 phone/modem jack. You cannot use a phone chord to plug into the Ethernet jack.  The Ethernet adapter for Laptop computers is different than the desktop version.  If you don't have an Ethernet card, you can purchase one at any computer store.  Install the adapter according to the manufacture's instructions.  We do not provide the installation service.
  • If you have an Ethernet adapter already, make sure TCP/IP protocol is properly installed.  Follow the instructions.

3.  Why is it still not working?

  • Make sure that you have Category 5 network cable.  It's an 8-wire cable that is a little bit thicker than telephone cord, and the RJ-45 jack is a bit bigger.
  • Verify that your network cable is correctly plugged into the network card on the back of your computer and ensure that it is firmly inserted to the Ethernet jack on the wall. Make sure you are plugged into a DATA port and not the phone jack. The Data port has a # on it.
  • Check to see if your Ethernet card is installed correctly. For example, Win95/98 users could use the following procedures:
    . Open "Control Panel"
    . Open "System"
    . Click "Device Manager"
. See if there is a yellow exclamation mark next to your Network adapter.
If there is, you have to remove this conflict before you can continue.  Call the technical support department of your computer manufacturer.
  • Check to see if there is a link light (green LED light) on your network card in the back of your desktop computer or on the cable of your laptop computer.  Call us at (310) 777-3456 if there is no green light.
  • If you do have a green light in the back of your computer, verify that your TCP/IP setting is correct.
    • From the Start menu, choose Settings and then Control Panel.
    • Double-click on the Network control panel icon.
    • Click on the TCP/IP item in the Network control panel. If you have more than one TCP/IP , click on the one pointing to your Ethernet card. For example, if you have a 3Com EtherLink III ISA Network Adapter, you would choose:TCP/IP -> 3Com EtherLink III ISA
    • After selecting TCP/IP , click on the Properties button. A tabbed dialog box will be displayed. Click on the IP Address tab.
    • Verify that Obtain an IP address automatically is selected.
    • Click on the WINS Configuration tab and then on the Disable WINS Resolution button.
    • Click on the DNS Configuration tab and then on the Disable DNS button.
    • In the TCP/IP Properties window click on the OK button, and then in the Network control panel window click on the OK button.
    • You will be prompted to restart the computer. Click on the Yes button.

4. Is my computer safe on the network?

As with any system connected to the Internet, there is a danger of unauthorized intrusion. If you have the need to share files with your roommates, make sure the files are password protected. We also recommend the use of Anti virus and Firewall software such as Norton Internet Security from www.symantec.com.
